Tour description

Bike tour from Bordeaux to Arcachon – Cycling holidays in south of Gironde

Among the various bike tour from Bordeaux to Arcachon and the Arcachon bay, this one is probably one of the most varied in terms of landscape. This cycling trip from the Bordeaux vineyards to the Atlantic coast follows cycle paths, bike roads, greenways and small roads with little traffic.

You will successively cross the hilly vineyards of Entre-deux-Mers (but made easy by bike because you will follow an old railway line: the Roger Lapebie bike path), the banks of the Garonne by follwing a portion of the Garonne Canal connecting Bordeaux to Toulouse. You will visit medieval fortified towns and cities such as Créon, Sauveterre de Guyenne and Saint-Macaire. The Sauternes vineyard now the welcomes you with its famous world-renowned winery Château Yquem. This area is crossed by the Ciron river at the edge of which you will enjoy taking a break. This river also marks the gradual entry into the Landes de Gascogne Regional Park and its isolated villages. A pleasant smell of the Landes pines will accompany you throughout its crossing.

Leave your bikes for a while and be sure to walk around the Hostens Lake and reach the fine sandy beach inviting you to swim in the heart of the forest. Soon you will reach the Leyre river which will take you to the shores of the Arcachon bay and the Ornithological Park of Le Teich. After a succession of active oyster ports, and in particular the port of Larros where you will not miss to taste some oysters, a cycle path along the beach will lead you to the seaside town of Arcachon. Take the opportunity to visit the “winter city” with its sumptuous villas.

You can extend your cycling holidays in Gironde with a final bike tour up to the majestic Pyla sand dune on the Atlantic coast which, from its 110 meters high, offers you a breathtaking view of the mouth of the bay, its sandbanks, The Cap Ferret and the Landes forest.

It is here that «Le Canal des 2 Mers à vélo» cycle route continues on its way under a canopy of plane trees until reaching Toulouse, or even Sète and the Mediterranean. Your wll follow it in the other direction to see the beginning of the Canal in Castets. This cycling days ends in Saint-Macaire, one of the most beautiful city of the Entre-Deux-Mers, built on a rocky promontory overlooking the plain. The village is framed by two « faubourg » or suburbs which were emerged in the Middle Ages. Stay a while and stroll through the narrow streets to discover old houses and ramparts. You then carry on to Balizac where you enter the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park, before reaching Origne for the night.

You will then reach the bassin of Arcachon at the Parc Ornithologique du Teich, maritime window of the Regional Natural Park. The sites for picnicking are not lacking, just choose!
You will then follow a coastal path, taking advantage of the salty and marine air of the bassin, going through the typical oyster ports like Gujan Mestras to join Arcachon by the small and beautiful oyster-farming ports.
Lined with tamarisks, arbutus, willow and wild prunus, the walk will also delight lovers of botany.

Having left your bikes for a moment, you can climb to the summit using steps or by a marked path. You will follow beaches on a magnificent track and you will join the “Pyla sur Mer” then Moulleau, a suburb to the west of Arcachon, a very lively place in summer with chic boutiques and trendy cafés.
