Burgundy cycling tour from Dijon to Macon

Burgundy cycling tour is home to some of the best known wines in the world. On your two wheels you’ll see the landscape is slightly hilly and very picturesque, dotted with medieval villages and historic towns. Some say that Burgundy is a little bit like Provence without the crowds.  Burgundy cuisine is justly famous – snails, Charolais beef, Bress chicken and wonderful cheeses. The region of Burgundy won’t have any secrets for you!

This Burgundy cycling tour takes you through one of the most famous vineyards of France known as Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits. Your delightful road bike begins from Dijon to Beaune. You will start your tour in Dijon, capital of the Ducs of Burgundy (also famous for its mustard). From there, you’ll experience biking on marvelous “La Voie des Vignes” bike trail through well-maintained vineyards as famous as Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault or Pommard. This is a highlight for every cyclist. This cycle tour lets you stop in many wine chateaux you want. take a leisurely stroll through the valley.

Then cycling routes takes you through Beaune, called the wine capital of Burgundy, and venture out from there more to the South through valleys.  You’ll stay in the town of Beaune, the capital of Burgundy wine. It’s there you’ll visit the “Hospices de Beaune” a medieval hospital turned into one of France’s most prestigious historic landmarks. The Hospices de Beaune or Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse . It was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor.

Last night: Macon, while discovering a town, the first thing you do is to familiarise yourself, street by street you can ride. Strolling is the best way to discover the old Mâcon which is a mosaic where history and men have left their scattered touch, discreet but living! This cycle tours has a lot of backroads and road cycling which are waiting for you! To be more confortable during your cycling tours, we can Bike hire or an E-bike as you prefer!

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Dijon

Upon arrival make your way to your first hotel. After check-in you are free to relax or explore. Delivery of road books, maps, bicycles. Overnight stay.

Day 2 : Dijon –Vougeot  20km

You will be following the Route de Grands Crus to Vougeot, you will go through Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey Saint Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, wine making villages of the area of Côte de Nuits. Overnight stay in Vougeot.

Day 3 : Vougeot – Beaune  25km

You will leave Nuits Saint Georges heading for Beaune, known as the Burgundy Wine Capital. The Hospices visit is a must stop. But in Beaune you will also discover cellars sheltering fantastic crus, and stroll on the paved, narrow roads which will take you back into the past. Overnight stay in Beaune.

Day 4 :  Beaune – near Chagny ~ 25km

You will cross the Côte de Beaune area going through the best known winemaking villages such as Pommard, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet with your bikes. You can stop by the mythical plot of Montrachet, considered with just cause as one of the greatest white wines of the world! Overnight stay near Chagny.

Day 5 : near Chagny – Dracy le Fort ~ 22km

You will leave Chagny following the Voie Verte alongside the Canal du Centre in the direction of Chalon sur Saone from where you can admire the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise. You will have the possibility to immerse into the Middle Ages with a visit of the Château de Germolles (3km from your hotel). Overnight stay in Dracy le Fort.

Day 6 : Dracy Le Fort – Cluny ~ 47km

From Dracy you will join another cycling path designed for leisure activities and built on ancient railway. From Givry you will follow it straight until Cluny. You will enjoy varied landscape of forests and traditional countryside houses: “cabottes” (small stone houses), wash houses, fountains… With a rich heritage and an artistic dimension, Saint Gengoux Le National is known as a medieval town. On your way to Cluny, you will go through Cormatin, a village well-known for its château. Landscape will change… and will become hilly. Arrival in Cluny, spiritual centre of Europe in the Middle Ages which had a considerable influence on religion, intellect, art… Overnight stay in Cluny.

Day 7 : Cluny – Macon ~ 28km

You will follow easy and flat itinerary on “Voie Verte” winding for about 23 km through the Val Lamartinien. Crossing the landscape dominated by rocks of Solutre Vergisson, Mont Pouilly-classified one of the most beautifull natural sites in France. You will cross the area, where the poet Lamartine has left many memories. Overnight stay in Macon.
