Lot valley bike tour from Agen to Sarlat
Come to discover the Lot valley by bike on this peaceful rde that crosses the departments of Lot et Garonne and Lot. In these rural departments crossed by the “Lot” river and the “Garonne” river, the landscapes are very strongly marked by agricultural activity. We are immediately struck by the variety of landscapes that make up the mosaic of cultures: field crops, market gardening, orchards, vineyards and meadows combine to create remarkable and very diverse landscapes.
Staring from Agen and its famous Canal Bridge, you will follow a small portion of the “Canal de Garonne” greenway and quickly reach the Lot river. You will cycle up the river from Aiguillon to Cahors (and even Saint-Cirq Lapopie !). It is then an atmosphere of peace and softness that invades you and will never leave you until the end of this Lot valley bike tour. Along streams and rivers, this pleasant bicycle route with fairly flat reliefs bordered by orchards and vineyards giving the landscape a garden-like appearance, is punctuated by numerous villages and bastides which invite you to relax.
You will visit Castelmoron, Pujols, Villeneuve sur Lot, Penne d’Agenais or Puy-L’Evêque. Perched above the Lot river, this medieval city is made up of a maze of alleys and staircases bordered by beautiful gilded stone houses that descend to the river where formerly the barges bound for Bordeaux. Do not miss a visit to the Château de Bonaguil, one of the most beautiful fortified castles in France. From the top of its rocky outcrop, it forms a place, unique in Europe, of gigantic proportions and in a remarkable state of conservation.
At the end of your cycling trip, the meanders of the Lot river will lead you to Cahors. You will then cross the famous Pont Valentré, medieval emblem of the city, before reaching your hotel on the shore. We strongly recommend that you extend your cycling holiday by an extra day for a spectacular escape to the village of Saint-Cirq Lapopie, perched on its rocky outcrop overlooking the river. A must ! The opportunity also to take the astonishing towpath carved into the rock … a curiosity not to be missed!
Land of gastronomy, Lot et Garonne et lot regions will awaken your taste buds with truffles, foie gras, lamb or melon from Quercy .. and Cahors Malbec wine. You will be warmly welcomed every evening in 3 and 4 star hotels
