The essentials of Black Perigord by bike in Dordogne

During this bike tour in the Dordogne, we suggest you reach by small roads and greenways some of the most beautiful places in this region of France: The black Perigord.

Starting from Sarlat la Canéda, a beautiful medieval city nestled between the Dordogne river and the Vézère river, you will cycle along the Vézère Valley and the Dordogne Valley to discover some of the most beautiful villages in France.

In your program, Les Eyzies de Tayac, world center of Prehistory, the no less famous Caves of Lascaux (Lascaux II or Lascaux IV… You can choose !), the picturesque village of Roque-Gageac on the banks of the Dordogne (you can moreover, push freely a little further to visit Beynac or Dommes).

This cycling holiday will end in Souillac for a final bike ride in the neighboring Lot region towards Rocamadour, a sacred city clinging to the cliff.

Multi faces bike tour that will take you from prehistoric times and medieval times. Each evening, You will have the opportunity to dine in the restaurant of your choice and taste the specialties of this region, certainly ones of the most delicious of France !

This cycle route in Périgord Noir still presents some relief. This is why do not hesitate to opt for the electric bicycle which will make your cycling holidays more peaceful.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Sarlat

« Sarlat » is one of the jewels of the Black Perigord which preserved the footprints of its history. Classified city of art and history, it was built during the ninth century around a large Benedictine abbey. The riches of its architectural heritage make its excellent reputation. Its narrow streets, its vaulted passage, its cathedral and its mansions of the fifteenth and sixteenth century will surprise you. The medieval city is also renowned for its largest number of classified and listed historical monuments in the world.

Day 2 : Sarlat - Les Eyzies - 25 km Climb 350 m

If you did not have time to visit Sarlat on your arrival, take the time to stroll through the medieval streets of this city. Perhaps you will have the opportunity to browse its famous market.Today take the opportunity to cycle towards the “Vezere Valley”: capital of prehistory! Depending on what you fancy, discover numerous treasures through caves, deposits or rock shelters.

The prehistory was born here, in « Les Eyzies » as a science whose name « Peyrony, Lartet, Capitan, des abbés Breuil and Glory » illustrated it. Here was discovered the Cro-Magnon man. Here you can discover the marvels of prehistoric cave art. You can also discover numerous prehistorically sites most of them on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Meet the Homo sapiens, remains of its habitat, common activities and its art.

Day 3 : Les Eyzies – Sarlat

1/ Short option  - 25 km Climb 400 m

2/ Long option  Via LASCAUX - 47 km  Climb 650 m

For this last step, you will continue your travel through time meeting with several prehistoric sites punctuating the Vézère Valley, before reaching the famous Cave of Lascaux. Here men of the Paleolithic have realized a completed and unique work, consisting of signs and animal representations. A masterpiece of prehistory, this priceless treasure is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

You can also go to Sarlat by a faster route (different from the one of the day before) to enjoy the gastronomic capital of Périgord Noir where you will enjoy regional cuisine: foie gras, truffles, duck ...

Day 4 : Sarlat – Souillac

1/ Option courte - 30 km  Climb 160 m

2/ Option longue via LA ROQUE-GAGEAC - 52 km Climb 500 m

You will leave Sarlat gently by a cycle path traced on an old railway, along the Dordogne Valley, it will lead you to Cazoulès, a few kilometers from Souillac. This easy and secure course will offer you a varied landscape, in the shadow of cliffs, between forests, small villages of the Dordogne and countryside.

If you wish, you can take a detour to reach the famous emblematic village of Roque-Gageac on the Dordogne river. If you have a little strength left, you are free to push a little further to Beynac or Dommes, both remarkable as well !

Day 5 : Loop Souillac – Rocamadour – Souillac - 42 km Climb 750 m

This loop day will take you to the small village of Lacave, on the edge of the Dordogne, before joining the inescapable sacred city of Rocamadour.

World famous, the medieval city clinging to the cliff in a superposition of houses and chapels, dominates the canyon of the Alziou over 120 meters!

High place of pilgrimage on the way to Saint Jacques de Compostela, Rocamadour is also famous for its Basilica Saint-Sauveur and the crypt Saint-Amadour, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, and its chapel Notre-Dame sheltering the Black Virgin.
